President’s Message

I find myself filled with gratitude after a busy season in the wine shop and a plentiful harvest. I am thankful to our customers for continuing to enjoy our wines and ciders and support our events. I am thankful to our incredible  employees in the orchard and vineyard who worked hard to maintain the highest quality of fruit despite a cool, relatively wet season.  I am thankful to our winemakers and cellar staff for their passion and attention to detail and I am thankful to our frontline sales staff who represent our brands everyday with a smile on their face.  As well, I am thankful to our behind the scenes administrative employees who keep our winery and cidery running smoothly and constantly moving ahead.

As I reflect on our progress, I also realize how much gratitude I have for the man who is ultimately behind all of this.  Many of you are probably thinking I am referring to my Great Grandad Ward who we champion for settling our property.  But the man behind our family company in more modern years is actually my father, Christopher Turton. After taking over ownership of the land and incorporating Canada West Tree Fruits with his brother in the early 1970’s, he went on to become the visionary behind growing cider apples and vitis vinifera grapes on our family property.  It was through his foresight and unyielding spirit that we have become a successful land based winery and, with the success of our Wards Craft ciders and our bulk cider division, we have become the largest cider producer in Western Canada.  And so, as we finish off another busy, award winning year at Canada West Tree Fruits, The View Winery and Wards Cider, I say thank you to my Dad and raise a toast to his enterprising, entrepreneurial spirit and his efforts to create our thriving multi- generational family business .

With gratitude,

Jennifer Turton-Molgat

Winemaker’s note

It was an out of the ordinary harvest in the valley this year. Colder temperatures and high rainfall made selective picking and fruit sorting a must. Yields overall in the valley were down. The 2019 vintage will see bright acidity and lower alcohol wines. I would say it may be the year of rosé and sparkling.
However, apple yields were most certainly up this year, as we had a record crop off our orchard! The cooler temperatures meant higher acid levels in the apples which has made some very nice cider.
The grape harvest started October 30th (12 days later than last year) and all the fruit was in by November 1st. The ferments are finished, reds are resting in barrel going though malolactic fermentation. Our hardworking cellar crew is exhausted and us winemakers are busily working on developing blends for the final wines. Once blended the whites and rosé wines will go through both heat and cold stabilization so they are ready for bottling in February and will find their way to your glass in March/April (depending release date).
There is definitely a few standout wines, the Pinot Gris and as usual Pinotage Rosé. Winter in the cellar means lots of babysitting, making sure all the wines are safe and protected in their winter homes, topping barrels, dry icing tanks, checking lab numbers and many bench trials.
All the vines are preparing for dormancy over the cold winter months. Now is when the pruning in the vineyard begins.
Another very successful vintage, a huge thank you to all the amazing, dedicated crew at The View.Cheers,
Kristy French
