Wine Club Love
The fall is a very interesting time at the winery. Just as we dig in for the busiest time of the year in the vineyard, orchard and cellar, visits to the wine shop tend to tail off.
But here’s a tip, the fall is actually the best time of year to visit a winery, especially one like ours where tastings often take place right in the cellar. On any given day you might be lucky enough to see our wine and cider making team working on the 2019 vintage.
If you need a good excuse to visit, be sure to bring your dog and join us for Wine and Wags which takes place every Sunday until the end of September.
Looking back on the season, we were thrilled with how many guests joined us for Vineyard Experience this summer. It’s always special to share some stories and knowledge about our historic property and wine region. Our Signature Experience includes an interactive, educational tour followed by a private picnic between the vines. Ask about our Vineyard Experience gift certificates for your hard to buy for friends and family this Christmas.
Our second annual Vineyard Dinner was also phenomenal. This event continues to be the highlight of the season, which may explain why it sold out in a flash.
As our wine club continues to grow we like to come up with new ways to make it worthwhile. This year, at our semi annual Pick up Party, we had members tasting wines in blindfolds and trying their own hand in blending some wines.
Our wines continue to win awards:
Gewürztraminer and Pinotage both were awarded Gold at the BC Best of Varietal Awards and Silver Lining Rosé was awarded Double Gold at the All Canadian Wine Championships. And we were thrilled to have our first Pinot Noir Vintage selected to be part of the prestigious BC Pinot Noir Celebration held at UBCO in August.
I am excited for you to try our soon-to-be released Pinot Noir Reserve. It is truly special and mirrors the elegance and sophistication of the amazing woman who made it. With her philosophy that the winemakers job when working with Pinot Noir is to highlight this delicate grape’s subtle beauty, Kristy French has really achieved excellence with our first vintage. Make sure you come in and try it.
While you are visiting be sure to download The View App and experience our new Augmented Reality Collection. We are the first winery in Canada to feature augmented reality labels. You are going to find them useful, educational and fun.
We are also proud of how our Wards Ciders are doing. In a marketplace where there are so many great craft ciders to choose from we managed to scoop-up 4 gold medals at the World Cider Championships.
We truly believe that the successes of each of the cideries from our region are good for all of us, which is why we opened up the Wards Ciders and Sliders Festival to cideries from all over the province this year. It was great to try and compare so many craft ciders in one place. It’s our hope that “cider touring “ becomes just as popular as “wine touring” in British Columbia.
As the growing season draws to a close we reflect on a busy year in the vineyard. Cooler conditions and a little more rain at the beginning of the summer contributed to vigorous growth. That means there has been more work than usual spent on controlling excess canopy growth so the plants can put their energy into fruit development. A later burst of warmth and sunshine bodes well for what should be an excellent year.
Things tend to get a little crazy around harvest time, and at times it’s “all hands on deck”. So don’t be surprised if you happen to see me in my rubber boots. You’ll be able to spot me because my boots are red of course!

Days are getting shorter, nights cooler and Fall is on its way which always makes me a little sad. An Aussie at heart with 3 restless children at home, I never look forward to it getting dark at 4:00 in the afternoon. And the cold! The Freezing bloody cold! Brrrrrrrrrrr!
But on the upside, Fall is a very exciting and busy time in the cellar, Harvest Time! Its like a blank canvas with endless opportunities to create new and exciting vino masterpieces. We always embrace the trials and tribulations of last year’s vintage asking; how can we make this year even better?
Everyone is busy cleaning hoses, tanks, pumps, presses, floors, & walls. You name it, it must be cleaned! All the equipment is pulled out and dusted off and checked to see that its working correctly. I never seem to stop planning and organizing, between hiring new staff, logistics, picking schedules, checking grape ripeness levels, tank juggling, and making sure all my wine is going to have a proper home fermenting and aging over the winter months.
Thanks to our cooler summer we have had very little smoke in the Valley this year! We think harvest dates will be around 1-2 weeks later than last year. Long slow ripening will yield fresh, elegant wines for the 2019 Vintage.
Verjus, meaning “green juice” is the first to arrive at the winery. We go through the vineyard and pick all the clusters of grapes that are lagging behind in ripeness and press them as whole bunches. These grapes are very low yielding and produce a high acid, low sugar juice that is then clarified and fermented to around 2-3% alcohol. This product as a big component in our famous Bling as it allows us to keep the final product on the lower alcohol side.
Next to come in are our beautiful apples, we are expecting them to start September 9th and continue coming until October 25th.
Sparkling grapes (Riesling, Pinotage and Pinot Noir) will be harvested around the 20th of September followed shortly by our Pinotage, for Rose’, mmmmmm Rose!
The remaining grapes are the bulk of our whites; Gewürztraminer, Ehrenfelser, Pinot Gris, Riesling and last but not least our favourite reds; Pinot Noir and Pinotage.

Wine & Wags Every Sunday

3:00-5:00 pm Join us for a fun and informative walk through the vineyard with your furry friend every Sunday in September (excluding September 1st)! If you don’t have a pooch, feel free to come anyhow – there will be plenty of wags and wiggles to go around.
And speaking of things that start with “w”, OF COURSE there will be a wine tasting to follow. $10 per person (plus tax)

A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the ST Johns Ambulance Therapy Dog program.
Pizza + Pinot October 5, 2019
1:00-5:00 pm Join us for artisan pizza and wine pairings featuring our neighbour Bellissimo’s delicious pizzas!

Riesling Through the Ages October 6, 2019
12:00-5:00 pm Hang out with us in the cellar for a vertical tasting of 7 consecutive years of The View’s classic Dry Riesling.
We will be tasting 2012 through 2018 and may even be pouring our off-dry Riesling to finish off the tasting experience.
Our Dry Riesling features classic slate characteristics with green apples and bright acidity.
The perfect pairing includes olives, sharp cheeses, pork loin and of course our signature fun pairing of Miss Vickie’s Salt & Vinegar chips. $10 per person (includes tax)

International Pinotage Day Celebration October 12, 2019
11:00 am-6:30 pm Join us to celebrate International Pinotage Day! The View Winery is one of the few wineries in the Okanagan that grows this unique South African grape.
